Sweet Prayers of Gratitude
train wheels screeched, an unexpected stop
startled, on edge
everyone looked out the window
swirls of railroad tracks coiled the elevation of mountains
all around were bushes and evergreen trees
stillness, softness of sky
morning mist ascended like the incense of one’s prayers
sweet prayers of gratitude
overshadowing the mountains like steam rising from a bagel
as the train waited, rested
positioned on the crest of a neighboring mountain
complete silence, breath- taking
thoughts quickly turned faces like pages and lips curled like well- read novels
the sound of the train’s whistle echoed gratitude
in motion
